Botox is the popular name for botulinum toxin. It is a naturally occurring substance that acts on the nerves of the muscles. Repeated movements of muscles can cause wrinkles. When a muscle needs to tighten, it normally receives a signal from the nerves. Botulinum toxin blocks this signal. The result is that the muscle can no longer or less tighten itself. For the skin, this means that it has less chance to create wrinkles and that wrinkles already in the skin get the chance to recover.
The areas that are well-treated with Botox include the frown (between the eyebrows), the forehead and crow's feet. Areas around the mouth and nose can also be treated. In addition, some medical conditions such as tension headaches, migraines and excessive sweating can be treated.
Botox is injected through the skin using small injections. It works best 14 days after the treatment. This means that from that moment on the skin has time to recover. Wrinkles that were formed earlier will slowly decrease from that moment on. This process can take weeks to months. After 3 to 6 months the botulinum toxin will have worn off and the treatment can be repeated.
There are various brands of botulinum toxin injections in the Netherlands. In principle, every brand works in the same way and equally well. At Beauty Centre Maastricht we only use Azzalure of Galderma. This is an A-brand that was one of the first on the market. It is a widely used, proven safe and good quality product.
Beauty Centre Maastricht offers treatments with Profhilo.
